NAMANYA MEMORIAL CENTER – UGANDA

Namanya Memorial Center (NMC) started as a dream of providing Ugandan children with access to books and educational opportunities.  Thanks to you, the  Namanya Memorial Community Library opened its doors to the public in July 2022.  Today, the library helps 60 visitors a day learn to read, complete homework assignments, borrow books, and master computers. When Collins, NMC’s founder, visited this spring, he watched an 8-year-old boy confidently lead a group of younger students through the sounds of the alphabet, letter by letter. It was a powerful demonstration of how education builds leadership and hope for the future!

Now, construction is underway on a Skills Training Center near the library. The center is already teaching trades like construction and sewing to older students so they can support their families. Your interest, encouragement, and generosity are moving this project forward one brick at a time. The first of the three floors is used daily as a workshop where students make bricks to sell and to finish building the center. The second and third floors will be bedrooms for out-of-town students, a kitchen, and more instructional space.

When Collins arrived, the rainy season was underway. A foot of water was trapped inside the building. Collins, his Father-in-Law, Brian McDonnell, and the students got to work. Using the bricks they made, they closed in the unfinished area where most of the water entered.

Hearing about the urgent need to finish the roof, drill a well, and install a solar water pump, Brian’s church family at Fresh Start Church in Saint Lawrence County, NY, sent $1,000 to help!

Generous donors have pledged $20,000 to match gifts to close in the building and add running water, making every dollar go twice as far!  Will you consider helping with your gift of any amount today?

Once we’ve tackled these critical needs, we’ll add instruction in welding, mechanics, and more. Training is provided free of charge to every student. Thank you for helping us add instruction in trades that will help them earn a living.
