SHERPA FAMILIES – Nepal

We have an over 30 year relationship with our Nepal families. We have an over 30 year relationship with our Nepal families. We have helped re-build a house destroyed by an earthquake, helped to improve the potential earnings of our Sherpa friends by supporting scholarships for English Training lessons, and have provided scholarship support for kids education.

Nawang’s two kids, Chewang and Cheji we have been supporting in school for over 5 years. Chewang is in school in a boarding school in Kathmandu. Cheji is in school nearer to her home village in a boarding school. Nawang was one of our sherpa guides on several Everest treks. When we visited them a year ago, Nawang sent me home with a gift of 5lbs of cheese, 5lbs of dried apples and much rice. It was a treat to see how well the family is doing. Nowadays, Nawang runs a small tea house and promotes jeep travel to his home village.

Bipasha and Fhulamu are the grand daughters or our guide Geljen. Geljen’s father was our cook over 30 years ago. At that time Geljen was our porter. Next Geljen’s son was our porter in the Everest trek a few years ago.  Last year Geljen took on raising the grandkids as their father has to work in Malaysia for money and his daughter is very poor in the home village. He broke down in tears when we told him we would help him. His work as a guide is very seasonal and funds are scarce. Educating these two beautiful kids will help them break out of the cycle of village poverty.
